What is EMDR Therapy?
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is an integrative psychotherapy approach that has been extensively researched with demonstrated effectiveness and success in treating several mental health issues including various types of trauma, chronic problematic thought patterns, and emotional distress. EMDR attends to both thoughts and feelings surrounding problematic issues, often resulting in more comprehensive and thorough treatment of presenting concerns. EMDR therapy can be incorporated with many models of psychotherapy tailored to each individual’s unique needs, circumstances, and concerns.
What does EMDR help?
While EMDR had been originally established as helpful for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), the following conditions have been successfully treated using EMDR:
- Depression
- Low Self-Esteem
- Couple, Marital, and Family Problems
- Childhood Neglect and Abuse
- Complicated Grief
- Disturbing Memories
- Obsessive-Compulsive Thoughts
- Phobias
- Pain Disorders including Migraines
- Anxiety
- Panic Attacks
- Addictions
- Stress Reduction
- Sexual and/or Physical Abuse
- Body Dysmorphic Disorders
- Personality Disorders
- Dissociative Orders
None of the above symptoms or experiences fit you?
Do you experience distressing emotions that appear to you, and perhaps to others, to be excessive given the current situation? Do you tend to be highly reactive to certain triggers? Are there one or more dysfunctional beliefs you believe about yourself that on an intellectual level you know is not true?
If so, you may be a good candidate for EMDR therapy.
